Abstract: This article begins with the history of open source, analyzes the essence of open science and open innovation, and argues that open development is the only path to building a community with a shared future for humanity: a vision of critical importance in today’s trend of anti-globalization. Furthermore, it discusses the current status and future of artificial intelligence (AI) models’ open source. Specifically, the article advocates that large language models must embrace open source, evolving into an infrastructure collectively maintained by the global community, and the intertwining of free innovation and business models is a key to foster a thriving AI open-source ecosystem.
